In June 2009 the blockade on the Gaza Strip enters its third year. The intense closure policy, coupled with the government of Israel’s recent military operation ‘Cast Lead’, has had a devastating impact on the lives and livelihoods of one and a half million Gazans, pushing them further into poverty and aid dependency.

Parties to the conflict and the international community have, to varying degrees, prioritised their own political objectives over people’s rights and needs, leaving Gazans sitting on the ruins of their homes. By attempting to isolate Hamas, the government of Israel and key international donor governments and institutions have in fact isolated the people of Gaza, thereby reducing chances of securing a peaceful, just and durable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the Inquiry Report published in February by the Charity Commission, as well as finding no evidence to substantiate allegations of illegal activity on the part of the Charity, a Statutory Order was made requiring Interpal to comply with certain directives in order to improve further our policies and procedures. These were specifically designed to ensure due diligence and risk management to an even greater level of effectiveness and verification.

As was made clear in our initial statement following publication of the Report, Interpal cooperated fully with the Inquiry Team and has always been ready and willing to implement Charity Commission guidance.

No inappropriate or biased distribution of aid

Press Release: Ibrahim Hewitt, Chairman of Interpal, the British charity which provides humanitarian assistance to Palestinians, has stated that “Interpal has been vindicated” by the report of the Charity Commission inquiry into Interpal, published today, Friday 27 February.

This is the third Charity Commission inquiry into Interpal in 13 years. In each case allegations and accusations made against the charity have been unproven.

The Trustees and staff of Interpal would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support and initiative following the formal notice served to the Islamic Bank of Britain (IBB) by Lloyds TSB to cease all dealings with Interpal. Earlier statements reported this deadline as being 30 January 2009.

To date, Interpal can report that Lloyds TSB have blocked their clearing services for Interpal however our account with IBB is still open and functioning. We would like to reassure our donors that our aid is being delivered to our areas of operation thanks to our local partners.

“The Three Faiths Forum, linking the three Abrahamic faiths at every level and across all age groups, feels the pain and frustration of Israelis and Palestinians as they pass through this dreadful time of armed conflict.

We look to both sides to find the moral strength and courage to bring speedily an end to the killing and to return to the search for peace which both peoples so desperately need and deserve.

For our part, we are resolved not to be deflected from the path of constructive dialogue which has so positively set the tone for faith relations in this country, and we will continue to do everything within our power to encourage the use of dialogue over conflict in the Middle East.”
