Emergency Aid

Establishing close relationships with partners on the ground allows Interpal to respond swiftly to emergency situations. Interpal acted within hours when the Al-Aqsa Intifada erupted on Friday 28th September 2000, by mounting an international campaign to raise funds to meet the immediate special needs of the Palestinian people. This included the provision of emergency medical supplies, food and shelter. Interpal’s crisis appeal highlighted the need to establish a fully operational emergency response unit which could provide medical care, fire rescue and control, and ambulance service support.

As part of the attempts by the occupying forces to gain control of Palestinian areas, Palestinians have often found themselves under house arrest and unable to access basic services. Ambulances and medical personnel are restricted from attending to casualties, and are unable to reach those who require emergency aid. Interpal has therefore adopted new methods of distributing emergency provisions and food from specially designated distribution centres positioned very close to the check points and easily accessible as curfew ends. The provision of a basic first aid kit to every household and a more advanced medical kit for practitioners allows unrestricted access to medical treatment on a local basis. Financial assistance has also been earmarked for the large number of victims of the conflict, including the families of those who have lost their breadwinners.

Child Sponsorship

Interpal is committed to serving those in need, by providing what they need most. Although the distribution of food parcels, housing aid and other essential resources form an integral part of Interpal’s work, the need for basic financial assistance cannot be underestimated.

Basic needs, such as a regular electricity supply and running water, are equally vital to the lives of a people who are already living in dire conditions.

This is why Interpal considers it extremely important to provide financial assistance to help needy Palestinians cover the most basic day to day requirements.

Through the one-to-one Sponsorship Programme, which is Interpal’s largest on-going project in the humanitarian field, a small monthly income is provided to over 6,700 Palestinian orphans, 800 needy children, and 75 poor families. The programme’s two primary goals are to provide essential aid, and psychological and moral support to the most vulnerable in Palestinian society.

Sponsorship does not solve every problem, but it goes a long way towards restoring Palestinian faith in humanity.

The beneficiaries of such aid are very grateful for the help they receive from strangers, which gives them hope and assures them that they are not forgotten. Little gifts, letters or photographs from sponsors are often a source of immense pride and pleasure to the sponsored individuals. Many Interpal sponsors also derive a great deal of pleasure in being able to help a people in need, and they do not remain strangers for long.
