A Brief Timeline
A Brief Timeline PDF Print E-mail

1914: Jews in Palestine make up less than 8% of the total population and own 2% of the land.

1947: UN Resolution 181 Partition Plan divides Palestine into a proposed Jewish state (55% of land) and proposed Arab state (45%). This plan is accepted by the Jews, but rejected by the Palestinians and neighboring Arab nations.

1948: Israel is created on 78% of the land, having annexed territory during the Wars of 1947-1948. This leaves the Palestinians with only 22% of their original territory.

1948: The Nakba. Between over 750,000 Palestinians are expelled from their land and homes. They are forced to leave as a result of direct and indirect Zionist action, while others chose to temporarily leave due to the escalating violence. Lands are confiscated by the Israeli state. The Palestinian refugees have not been allowed back to their land or their homes since.

1967: Six Day War: East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are invaded and occupied. These territories have remained under an illegal occupation. More Palestinians are displaced.

1987: First Palestinian Intifada or uprising breaks out against the Occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

2000: Second, or Al-Aqsa, Intifada is triggered when right-wing leader Ariel Sharon visits the main Muslim holy site in Jerusalem with more than a thousand armed soldiers.

2002: Construction begins on the Separation Wall, cutting deep into West Bank territory. When it is completed, it will measure 721 km, resulting in 60,500 Palestinians in 42 villages and town living in a no-man’s-land between the Green Line and the Wall.

2006: Israeli-imposed siege on Gaza begins, which prevents supplies from going in or out, making it impossible for thousands of people to go to work, to school or seek medical treatment abroad.

2008: Since the Al-Aqsa Intifada, more than 5,000 Palestinians have been killed and 40,000 have been injured. 60th anniversary of the Nakba.
